X's latest AI chatbot, Grok 3, is now available for everyone to use for free. Initially launched earlier this week with a requirement for a paid subscription, this restriction has been lifted according to xAI, the AI company formed by Elon Musk. Grok 3 brings to the table more than just typical chat features, offering groundbreaking modes such as DeepSearch and Think.
Advanced Features: DeepSearch and Think
One of the standout features of Grok 3 is DeepSearch mode, a capability that mirrors the Deep Research options available in ChatGPT Pro, Gemini Advanced, and Perplexity AI. DeepSearch uses a virtual agent to scour the internet, compiling a detailed report about your chosen topic. This feature is ideal for users who need thorough, extensive research done in mere moments.
Another noteworthy feature is Think mode, designed to tackle challenging problems in fields like math, science, and coding. Think mode leverages a sophisticated reasoning model to break down complex questions into easily digestible steps, providing users with a clear line of reasoning and a comprehensive solution.
Subscription Benefits and Costs
While Grok 3 is free for all X users, those subscribing to X Premium+ and the new SuperGrok plans will enjoy additional perks. Subscribers receive enhanced access to Grok's advanced features, including the soon-to-be-released Voice Mode. This feature will allow the AI to speak using different voices, transcribe audio, and share those transcriptions.
It's worth noting that the cost of these premium subscriptions is fairly steep. This week, X increased the price of X Premium+ to $40 per month, from the previous $22. Although the price for the new SuperGrok subscription has not been disclosed yet, it is expected to be similarly high.
Subscription Type | Price | Benefits |
---|---|---|
X Premium+ | $40/month | Increased Grok access, Voice Mode |
SuperGrok | --- | Advanced Grok features |
How to Use Grok 3
To start using Grok 3, simply log into X and select the Grok option on the left sidebar. At the prompt, type and submit your request. Grok consults various websites and user posts to generate a response. Furthermore, users can access and view all the sources used to formulate the answers. Grok supports analysis of diverse file types including PDFs, JPG and PNG images, text files, CSV files, XML files, Microsoft Word documents, and Excel spreadsheets.
Exploring DeepSearch
For more in-depth results, users can select the DeepSearch button. At the prompt, type and submit a more complex query requiring extensive online research. Grok will then search multiple online sources, preparing a thorough report on the information gathered.
Taking on Complex Problems with Think Mode
For users who want to put Grok 3 to a real test, the Think mode is the way to go. By selecting the Think button, users can present complex math or science problems. The AI deconstructs the problem step-by-step, offering a clear explanation of its reasoning process before delivering the final answer.
Accessing Grok 3 Beyond X
Beyond its integration in X, Grok 3 can also be accessed through its dedicated webpage, as well as via its iOS and Android apps. As highlighted by my ZDNET colleague Sabrina Ortiz, "xAI’s Grok 3 is better than expected." After extensive testing with typical requests, as well as using the DeepSearch and Think modes, I find that the AI competes effectively with leading solutions like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
AI in the Spotlight
Artificial Intelligence continues to evolve at a rapid pace, and tools like Grok 3 showcase just how advanced and user-friendly these technologies have become. Whether you are using AI for coding, data analysis, or solving complex problems, Grok 3 stands out as a robust option in the ever-expanding AI landscape.
